Kinabalu Earthquake Relief Project

On 5th June 2015, a strong 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck off Ranau, Sabah. Eighteen people died, mostly Singaporean students from Tanjong Katong Primary School, while about 137 other people who were climbing the mountain were stranded, but were subsequently rescued.

Tremors were felt across Sabah and as far as Labuan, Lawas, Limbang and Miri in Sarawak as well as Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei.

The earthquake caused serious damage to houses, infrastructure and public assets around Kundasang, Ranau and Kota Belud areas. Water supply was disrupted for many days when the main water drainage pipe burst, and several plants in both regions were damaged with a leakage in the deposition tank.

The earthquake and subsequent aftershocks numbering more than 100 had loosened rocks, boulders, soil and vegetation on the mountain slopes. All these have and will continue to flow into the rivers, causing mudslides. The mudslides have affected villages, Kampung Mesilau, Kampung Kiau, Kampung Lobong-Lobong and Kampung Kaung.

As a result of the disaster, the Kinabalu Earthquake Relief Effort Team was formed, to which PAN Sabah acts as the Earthquake Relief Site Coordinator, to send in essential aid including boxes of mineral water, rice, flour, sugar, salt, can food, biscuits, mattresses, sleeping bags & cash aid for repairs of buildings to the affected areas around Kundasang, Ranau & Kota Belud.

To support the affected villagers, the Team has thus far conducted among others a forum for trauma treatment and is in the process of introducing organic farming training and provide marketing support for the villagers’ financial recovery.
